We were asked to create a channel ident for E4 which is called an ESting. This was to be 10 seconds long and to include the E4 logo.
Exhibition
To show people my ESting, I posted on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr where I also asked people to fill out a survey in the process. I also sent out emails to people in college so they were able to watch it and fill out a survey. The video was originally posted on Youtube where we were able to link it to other sites. Other than showing it on social networking sites, showing it to a group of friends or family is another way to exhibit the piece. Public screenings may also be possible; in Norwich there are big screens placed near the Forum where the video may be shown. In college there are TV's around where people are able to get there work or notices shown, so if approved the video could be shown there. These two methods would get a broader audience to watch it.
Feedback
To collect feedback I asked many people to fill out a survey as well as putting it on Facebook and asking for responses on certain aspects. I sent out the survey to many people my age, around 16-18 due to that being are primary target audience, however we did get feedback from our secondary audience which was families. These are the questions I asked:
Overall the feedback I got for my piece was positive and the majority of people asked enjoyed it. The responses we got from people were around the ages of 17. People liked the way we made the E4 logo come to life and move around the arms. The majority of people where also able to identify the target audience and the genre of this piece which means this was successful. One or two people commented on how the whole piece ran smoothly and how the lighting was very professional. We made sure the lighting looked good to give out ESting a more cleaner smoother look and where glad people picked up on this.
Constraints
During filming our piece we had a few restraints. One of them being the space provided. At first we decided to film in the classroom which was very crowded and the mise-en-scene wasn't very good therefore we were faced with where to film next. We chose the prop room which would be good for filming as it had lights, a clean black wall and a clean space, however other groups had also chosen to film in there so we had to work around them. It was hard at first but we got there in the end.
This leads me on to the lights. The first lesson we spent a while trying to figure out the lighting and what would be the best set up. The next lessons one of the main lights we used was broken so we waited around for a while until it was fixed. The next lesson we were able to film properly.
We didn't get very much of a budget but we hadn't the need to use it as we just needed clay and a small space to film.
Since E4 provided us with the music, there wasn't any legal and regulatory issues faced and we were able to edit without a worry.
Time
Time for us was rather tight as we were asked to re-film and also due to a weather warning closing college for a couple of days, meaning we did miss the deadline by a few days. During film though we discussed which parts to shoot each day so we could try and meet the deadline. During editing we had to fix to lighting as it was slightly off which did take a couple of lessons.
Requirements
I believe we did meet all the requirements as we used their music and sound effects like they asked for. Our piece is also 10 seconds long which meets their requirements. The ESting isn't explicit or violent and therefore can be shown at anytime during the day. Finally, it had the E4 logo in it which is required.
Channel 4 follow Ofcom's code in which they expect the production team to also follow if they wish their product to be shown. In "the Code" by Ofcom, there are many sections, one of them being "Protecting the Under-Eighteens". As mentioned in the Esting guidelines, the content used shouldn't be harmful which is also written in in this section; "Material that might seriously impair the physical, mental or moral development of people under eighteen must not be broadcast" (source)
Feedback
We collected the feedback from friends and family, along with some people online that had filled out the survey or given us feedback. We also got feedback from classmates. The majority of the feedback was positive.
I found this project was just a little hard as we had to work to a brief however it did allow us to be more creative. We were able to do what we liked with the ESting which allowed us to come up with many ideas. I have learnt a lot about animation and stop motion and the way it works during this unit, but I have decided animation isn't my thing.
I think I would be suitable to work within the media industry where working to a brief is mandatory. I would look at the brief carefully and manage my time well so I was able to get it done on time with the right regulations.
Although I did enjoy animation, I've decided that I wouldn't want to take it on any further. This is due to it taking a lot of work with moving objects, taking pictures. I think I'd like to stick to TV and film.

Shauna,
ReplyDeleteThis is a nice reflection on you own experience. I have awarded a merit for both U5:GC4 and U33:GC4 as you have covered the terms and used examples.
To get a distinction you should quote Ofcom and C4 in regards to their broadcast guidelines and add more details where necessary, e.g., specific quotes from E4's competition rules. You could also add extra detail on the E4 music, copyright and what you would do differently if you were to undertake the task again.

Weird place for the pre-production but it is on here so that's fine!
ReplyDeleteMerit achieved, well done.
