Research and Planning: E4 and the Brief

E4 is a channel in partnership with Channel 4. They have been around for 12 years, the channel first launching in 2010. They air many popular US shows such as Glee, New Girl, Desperate Housewives, The Big Bang Theory and One Tree Hill. They also show many popular British TV shows like The Inbetweeners and Made In Chelsea. The majority of these shows are aimed at the 15 to early twenties audience this is because of the theme of the shows and how the audience are able to relate to them. Either because they are going through the same thing or the characters are the same age. The secondary audience to E4 would be people in their thirties and above. All these age ranges would be in middle (B) or lower (C1) class.
Other channels owned by this broadcaster are More 4, 4Seven, 4Music and Film4. Once again the majority of these channels are aimed at teenagers and early adults apart from More 4 and 4Seven, which are aimed at people in their late thirties. Film 4 is aimed at anyone due to them showing a wide variety of films for all ages.

E4 have a competition where the public can send in a 10 second video, which must include the E4 logo, which will be shown during the ad breaks. These videos are called Estings (E4 and Estings). Every year they have competition where the public can send in these videos and the best will be shown on E4. I have chosen three which I enjoy the most.

 

I think the target audience of this Esting is early adults. This is because of the marriage/relationship theme of the Esting. The genre of this Esting is comedy. In this Esting, I like how these are actual sketches made into animation.



The target audience for this Esting would be for the slightly older audience, this is because of the tea and biscuit aspect. The genre of this Esting is comedy.


I think the audience for this Esting could be anyone from a young audience to an older one, due to the humour of it. The genre of this Esting is comedy. In this Esting I like how they have incorporated animation and live action as this is a thing I would like to do in my Esting.

To help prepare for the brief, in class we have made a thaumatrope, a praxinoscope and a zoetrope. The thaumatrope was to test the persistence of vision and the others were to see how still images were first animated.

 



We have also made a short claymation and live action video to help us decide which type of animation we would like to use for our Esting. I feel our claymation went fairly well, however we could have made something more interesting happen.






For my Esting, I would like to do a 'live action' piece with maybe claymation some how incorporated. The reason for using claymation and 'live action' is because I have enjoyed making both, although, making the clay objects got messy and the colours did get cross contaminated with other colours. My idea would be the E4 logo chasing someone to get them to tune into the channel or have someone holding the claymation E4 logo.
